It's there to trick you into going there too early Like a lot of things in the game, it exists to frustrate your expectations, another good example being Wilbur in the Swine King encounter who exploits your natural tendency in games like this to prefer killing back line "helper" monsters first even though this is actually the worst possible thing you can do in this encounter. It's there to trick you into going there too early, which I fell for the first time. it's a minor nuisance but should be ignored until you actually have a roster that can reliably deal with bloodsuckers. you still get events like the Flagellant appearing and, I think, the obligatory events that occur on finishing certain quests like the "collect 3 whatevers" quests.
